Pat Roque, the 2006 Long Beach to Catalina & Back winner, is expected to compete against other top racers.
The crew behind the Long Beach to Catalina & Back race, R.P.M. Racing Enterprises, is getting ready to host the first-year Dana Point to Avalon Offshore Sprint Race in the Pacific Ocean off the Southern California coast. Sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA), the endurance race will take place Sunday, April 5, and will pit professional, amateur and veteran class racers against one another on the open ocean for the 37-mile run to Catalina Island.
Once the race is finished, racers will refuel and join up with their designated “wingman” for the ride back to Dana Point, which is not a race. An awards ceremony will follow once all racers have returned safely.
“R.P.M. is proud to be a part of this event and we think races like this will be a catalyst to help revitalize the sport of offshore endurance racing,” said Ross Wallach, race promoter and owner of the Redondo Beach, Calif., company.
With the recent resurgence in offshore racing, the run is expected to bring racers and enthusiasts alike from across the country to compete in the Pacific waters.
“It doesn’t get any better for the offshore PWC racer than holding the throttle wide open in the open ocean, hammering through the rough water with fellow offshore enthusiasts,” said Mark Gerner, founder of PWCOffshore.com and the recent winner of the 2009 Mark Hahn Memorial 300 with teammate Robert Carreon. “It takes a special breed of endurance athlete to win this type of race.”
